Help! My clivia have been hit by the dreaded amaryllis worms! How can I save my plants?

Adrian says: “I insert an Initiator tablet from Bayer into each pot. It works as both a systemic insecticide and a fertilizer. The active ingredient is imidacloprid, which is absorbed by the plant. When caterpillars chew on the leaves, they ingest the chemical and die shortly after. Each tablet provides protection for up to 12 months.”

Ado says: “To avoid affecting bees [with insecticidal spray] simply spray outside of flowering season for the specific plant. Bug Killa is a granular solution that works well and is a lot cheaper than tablets and is the same active ingredient as Confidor (imadacloprid). Bunnings has stopped stocking these systemic pesticides so you will need to get it at a local nursery. Pyrethrum, Baythroid, and Mavrik from Bunnings are also highly effective for the black amaryllis worms; you just need to get them early.”
